And almost at the end of February already. Today I’m sharing details to be considered when investing in curtains. They are an investment, however if you invest once you will reap the benefits for years to come.
Curtains are a graceful
And timeless window covering solution. Sheer curtains offer privacy and diffuse day light. Lined curtains add warmth and give privacy in the evening.
There are many considerations to selecting curtains for your home. Made to measure is the best solution because it fits your window perfectly.
Style
Are you a minimalist, maximalist or do you sit somewhere in between? Traditional and formal or relaxed and informal. The architectural style of your home will often determine the style of curtain.
One thing for sure is …
Let the fabric do the talking. Patterned fabrics are a bold move. They will bring your look together when you’ve a mix of colours in your room. If your room lacks pattern or has a neutral colour palette, a patterned fabric can become the focal point. That’s drawing your eye into the room focusing on the fabric.
You just have to love the fabric selected as it will be there for quite some time.
Plain fabrics bring a modern look to a room.
If neutral in colour they become the backdrop to other elements in the room. And versatile as you can change the colour scheme in your room without changing your curtains. Plain doesn’t need to be boring either, opting for a vibrant colour adds contrast and trimmings for a fun interest.
Curtain headers
That's the top band of the curtain, will create a modern or traditional look. Triple / double pleats are traditional in style. They use a generous amount of fabric draping in folds. A newer version, having the top (rather than bottom) pleat stitched together creates a modern twist.
Box pleats, use less fabric and give a slimline look. New York pleats, create neat tight folds, ideal where space is limited. They are the best solution when little or no wall space can accommodate curtains.
Wave headers are the perfect solution in contemporary homes. The headers consistent folds of fabric back and forth create uniformity that retains shape.
Linings
Create an insulation layer by keeping warm air inside and cold air out. They protect your fabric from UV rays and reduce noise. Black out linings darken rooms for a good night’s sleep.
Length
Skimming the floor, touching the floor or pooling on the floor for a graceful and chic look. Your selected fabric will play a part in which is the best solution for your room.
And finally hardware...
Tracks can be recessed into the ceiling for a seamless floor to ceiling look. Minimal tracks are perfect for lightweight fabrics, with larger tracks or rods for heavier fabrics. It all depends on the look we are wanting to achieve.
Brackets come in various depths and adjustable to suit projection requirements from window sills. They can be fixed to the wall or the ceiling.
Pull your curtains; by hand (with or without a rod), by cord (pulley system) or by motorisation with remote or phone app.

Based in Seattle USA, Brian had the dream of living a bohemian artists life. Painting, that's all he wanted to do, however that doesn't pay the bills. He found a job in a textile and furniture showroom, and the designer was born.
I love his work. Loads of substance, uncluttered, everything with a purpose. Less is more. Muted colours that complement each other and making full use of textures to complete a space. Tons of inspiration!
