I'm loving this book, a lesson in colour and all it's subtleties.

Lamps, floor or table create visual interest.

And provide soft ambient light. Floor or table lamps provide stylish background lighting to living spaces and bedrooms. The size, shape and colour are just as much part of the overall interior design scheme as other furnishings.

However it’s what you want the lamp light to do that determines the type of lamp that will fit and fill the space.

Floor lamps placed in the back corner of a chair

Give good reading light. Floor lamps visually highlight the shape and material of surrounding objects.

Table lamps placed on a side table

Give soft background light. Ideal when watching TV.

If you like to read in bed

Then a taller lamp is better, one that throws the light over your shoulder. Another option, dedicated reading lights integrated into your headboard, they focus light solely on your book.

If you want mood lighting

Then a shorter lamp casts low indirect light.

When it comes to lamp shape

The more sculptural the better. Whether floor or table it’s all about being seen and drawing your eyes into the surrounding space.

Reduce Reuse Recycle

Are you familiar with any objects above? There are old camera tripods, parasols, bamboo sticks, and those popular Vietnamese field hats. A New York creative Christopher Tennant is creating new out of old. Clever, artistic and colourful. You can read about Christopher’s inventiveness here. I'm loving this book.

Arent and Pyke - Interiors beyond the primary palette.

Juliette and Sarah-Jane are Sydneysider interior designers. They have a love of colour, that is, subtle muddy colours. They work within the tertiary colour palette which has softer nuances rather than spots of bright colour. These softer hues can create magical colour moments layer upon layer.

Each project is showcased by telling you how many colours are used in the home, the size of the home and who lives there.

It's a 'less is more' approach to interior design. Considered thought into every detail, yet not contrived or over cooked. The living rooms are inviting places to relax, in total comfort, including shapely lamps. They use colour and pattern in fabrics, wallpapers and rugs, however controlled. Most often ceilings, skirtings and architraves are painted crisp white to offset the colour and make you focus on other elements in the room. And speaking of elements they use them all, timber, marble / quartz, leather, wool, rattan, brass, plaster, tiles, glass and artworks. They are mistresses in subtlety, quite extraordinaire.

Interestingly, Juliette and Sarah-Jane last week won two awards at the HOME magazine Interior of the Year 2023 awards. 2023 Kitchen of the Year and Resene Colour Award for a Queenstown home.
