The Business of Affordable Art

Saturday, 6 April 2024

Artwork adds energy and colour to a room.

Today I’m sharing ideas on where to source affordable art. Galleries are a number one destination. However auction houses, second hand / op shops, and those smaller unique galleries in provincial towns may have the piece that you desire.

There is nothing more uplifting...

Than to be surrounded by light, warmth and art. Art gives you the opportunity to pause and take a breath, and love what’s on your walls.

Dunbar Sloane Auctioneers

Currently have an Affordable Art auction online. Their online auctions work just like TradeMe.  If your passing through Featherston Street in Wellington their auction rooms are always filled to the brim with interesting stuff. I enjoy scouring for one off pieces of furniture and interesting objects.

Webbs Auctioneers

Currently have an Affordable Art auction online. Webbs have a gallery at 23 Marion Street in Wellington. It's well worth a browse through their gallery style showroom.

Art shows are an affordable way to purchase artwork.

Art Shows Across Aotearoa have large-scale shows in Christchurch, Auckland, Queenstown and Dunedin. Now for the first time in Wellington at Takina, the new convention and exhibition centre. Artists’ artworks are from around the country with several thousand artworks for sale.  Prices range $200 - $20,000, so there’s art for all budgets. The variety is large with wall-hung artwork / paintings, large works up to 2.4m wide, sculptures, object art, glass works, jewelry, ceramics and more.

Complimentary Show Day tickets

So if you’re looking for artwork, here’s a fab opportunity, complimentary tickets to the new WELLINGTON ART SHOW.

This Show Day ticket is valid for:

Saturday 20 April: 10am - 8pm, OR Sunday 21 April: 10am - 5pm

Each person must present their own ticket on their phone or in print form at the entry. Enjoy this treat and you may find a beautiful artwork that will complement your home.

Wallpapers also lend themselves to being an artwork.

I thought these wallpapers would make fabulous contemporary artworks because of their handcrafted nature. Just launched by Elitis, you can purchase these papers by the metre. Beautifully tactile..

New Zealand Fine Prints

If you're looking for iconic New Zealand prints, this website is for you. Affordable, small to large prints. Plus they will frame your artwork too.

For framing artwork I recommend Framefox.

Framefox have a selection of neutral coloured frames and the popular floating frame for canvas artwork. I’ve used this company several times for clients artwork.

I'm a big fan of UK designer Kit Kemp.

Kit has published a number of books and is always inventive with her artwork.  Above is a sketch of their family pet dog, Brumus.  Part of the frame is made with tin cans of his favourite dog food. Below are affordable and creative artwork ideas.

I was inspired by Kit Kemp.

To create these artworks for my son, Christian when he was 10 years old. The old metal toys were cherished by his Grandad. Ten years on and they are still on his bedroom wall.

You can frame almost anything. The more inventive your art, the more meaningful and admirable it will be in your home.
